43rd Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk
Charity Walk 2022 preparation time is upon us! We’re happy to announce that the 43rd Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk will be held in person this year on 8/20/2022, at Vidinha Stadium.
Last year with the reopening of tourism in May, we seized the opportunity to continue our long-standing tradition of giving back. Between August 30 and September 12, we hosted the 42nd Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, raising $261,478.65 which supported 46 nonprofits on Kaua’i.
Kaua‘i Chapter’s Board of Directors would like to extend our deep appreciation to all our sponsors that made our 42nd Annual Visitor Industry Walk a big success. We would like to recognize the exceptional contribution of the Sheraton Kauai Resort as our top fundraiser hotel, for their donation of $30,001 under the leadership of General Manager Chip Bahouth. We would also like to recognize Lilian Watari as our top individual Charity Walk fundraiser for the 6th year in a row and Emerson & Peggy Knowles as our top donor. Lilian is the Guest Service Manager of Hanalei Bay Resort and she raised $21,344.77. Emerson & Peggy Knowles are timeshare owners at Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club and have been calling Kaua‘i home for the past 7 years. A special mahalo to all our corporate sponsors and businesses that donated gift certificates and goods for our fundraiser events, we couldn’t have done this without their support. Although Charity Walk has been an annual tradition every May since 1978, the pandemic stalled our fundraising efforts this year.
Like many other organizations, our ability to financially give back to our island community was limited by the effects of COVID-19. With restrictions in place many Kaua‘i businesses, chiefly those in the visitor industry, were profoundly affected and we were unable to proceed with hosting the 2020 Charity Walk and 2021 Charity Walk in the spring. However, with the reopening of tourism in May, we saw a glimmer of hope and seized the opportunity to resume our planning. Between August 30 and September 12, we continued the longstanding tradition of giving back by hosting the 42nd annual Charity Walk, albeit with a few modifications. For the first time ever, our event took place virtually, and with the help of 700 donors, 17 hotels, and 25 businesses & sponsors we were able to raise $261,478.65, far exceeding our target of $200,000! We are proud to say that all the funds we raised will be used locally for the benefit of Kaua‘i’s community and will provide financial support to 46 Kaua‘i non-profit organizations. We are humbled by the outstanding outpouring of support and generosity that has once again demonstrated the unique nature of unity and community care that our island is famous for. Let’s work together to make the 2022 Charity walk a success!
The Charity Walk, founded in 1974 and expanded statewide in 1978, is now Hawai’i’s largest single-day fundraising event by a non-profit organization. Since its inception, more than $32 million has been raised to support hundreds of local charities throughout the state. Spearheaded by the Hawai’i Lodging & Tourism Association and its non-profit arm the Hawai’i Hotel Industry Foundation, the Charity Walk is held every year on Hawai’i, Kaua’i, Lana’i, Maui, Moloka’i, and O’ahu. Money raised on an island or county stays there.
